Michael Copeland Sydnor

I’m a ‘cultural activist’ who develops art for ‘cultural entertainment.’ This is my mission. As a cultural activist, my visual artistic works are thematic structures designed to provoke memories. This theme has been the backbone for my work for over the past thirty years. My professional multi-disciplinary arts experience (1980 through 2010) has helped me generate a prolific, diverse and adventurous oeuvre, which runs the gamut from broadcasting to public relations, art, art history, journalism, and special events producer.

This experience has lead me to design a method, or formula, where I take facts, add a cultural perspective, then present theatrical productions, or curate art exhibitions or produce special events to get the desired outcome.

I rely on two methods for the installation work I create. The first method is for actors and audiences to recite text culled from historical facts. The other method is similar to a jazz music set, designed for an extemporaneous flow of living history ‘performers’ who share their actual historical perspectives using a theatrical model for staging.

Similarly, with the work I create as a visual artist, there has to be natural elements implemented on canvas (found objects, artifacts, ephemera). Some work is loosely based sculptures on canvas. Other works are exhibitions of artifacts with moving images using computers, TV’s, and digital photo displays.

For me, I need my work to have a didactic meaning with a subliminal message designed within the art. There is always a message to communicate.
